Ki Nassauer of Junk Revolution makes the most amazing things out of junk - she has a great eye for seeing the potential in stuff. She recently had an Ugliest Light Fixture in the World Contest asking her commenters for ideas about what to do with a truly horrible light fixture. There were some great [...]
The City of Seattle has a surplus warehouse - they currently have leftover street signs, used parking meters, typewriters, other odd stuff. I also found a link there to Public Surplus, an online clearinghouse of stuff from all over the country - there’s a spot on the right to check for surplus auctions in your [...]
Andrea over at Heavy Petal had a roundup of plant markers recently - a lot of the pre-made ones are really expensive! And really my favorites of the bunch were the ones she made herself with rubber stamps and craft sticks. I don’t need to label my veggies - I can tell what they are [...]
Wow - I wouldn’t have thought that gutters could hold enough dirt to grow actual vegetables! (though I’ve had little ferns grow in mine) This gutter garden belongs to Cornelia, who posted on Homegrown. This is a great use for salvaged gutters, and I love how it looks against the house. I’d be a bit [...]
Re-nest has before-and-after pictures of cathinca’s shipping pallet furniture. This is out on her deck, but if you had a big space and needed cheap furniture, it would work really well, too.
Josh Kopel made this great light fixture from stuff he found at the Seattle RE Store.
My friend Michelle sent me a bunch of links to recycled bottle projects - I liked this garden bed border. I think they would need to be anchored pretty securely (concrete?), to fill them with soil for low raised beds, but maybe just sticking them in the soil would work?
One of the points on our Genteel Recessionista Atlas Salvage map (look! link over there on the right!) is for the Seattle RE Store. The RE Store buys and sells salvage - they’re a non-profit, so you can get tax receipts for your donations, or get in-store credit. They’re great about helping you find what you [...]
