Wow! Anna the Red was asked to make a Google Chrome icon bento, and to videotape the process. I knew she was really creative and had mad bento skilz, but after watching the work that goes into making one bento, I think she’s a little nuts(in a good way).
We love enchiladas and you can make a batch with about 10 minutes of labor time - really fast food! It’s one of the few dishes that I’ll use prepared sauce in, even though the sauce is the most expensive part; we really like Hatch brand. I need to look around and find a good [...]
Tim sent me a link to these YouTube videos of Clara - she’s in her 90s, and shares cooking and stories from the Great Depression era. . She has her own website, and is selling a DVD and has a cookbook in the works. She’s a great reminder that, even though a lot of us [...]
We’ve still had some pretty cool weather here in Seattle - it’s still a bit too cold to plant tender veggies in the garden, but the trees are leafing out and everything looks very lush and green. (The picture above is of one of my tomato plants, spending its fourth night outside - it’s rainy [...]
Here’s a small round-up of some of my favorite frugal food blogs I’ve run across recently.
Things Your Grandmother Knew - not just food, but lots of vintage thrifty ideas, too.

You don’t have to get as fancy as Anna the Red to do bentos, they can be really simple (though I’ve noticed a lot of bento makers tend to really go over the top). And they can be really frugal - there’s a lot of planning ahead, and using leftovers. Plus bento boxes are charming. [...]
Anna the Red makes the most amazing bentos I’ve ever seen - she does Totoro, Yoshi, Kirby, Pikachu - you have to go look for yourself, they’re incredibly detailed and charming, and she generously shares all her techniques. I really like the bentos, but can’t imagine making them myself. But, one of these days, I’m [...]
As promised, here’s a soup recipe that uses the chicken stock you made from the bones of the chicken you roasted.
Black beans are my favorite kind of bean - I use them for cold bean salads in the summer, and in quesadillas, and they’re perfect for soup. It’s nice to have some canned black beans [...]
Tigers and Strawberries has an excellent post on making soup as a way to avoid wasting food - scroll down to find out how to tell if produce is salvageable, or too spoiled to use. Also, I had never heard the term “passepants” before.

I heard on the news that about 50% of people are cooking at home more than they were a year ago, and that cooking classes are really full - lots of people don’t know how to cook at all. It does take some time and planning, but it’s really not rocket science, and we have [...]
