Beekeeping - yard rent

bees

It’s legal to keep bees in Seattle proper, but my yard isn’t big enough to comply with the setback regulations. Also, I love the little critters, but kidlet is terrified of them, so no bees for me - maybe someday! If you do have a big enough yard, you can keep bees yourself, or do a yard rent with a local beekeeper in trade for some honey. Hive Mind Honey has a nice post about yard renting (that’s Jordan’s photo up there). If you’re looking for a beekeeper that might want to set up a hive in your yard, a lot of cities have beekeeping groups - visit a meeting and strike up a conversation. Bee Culture magazine has a list of Who’s Who in North American Beekeeping. Here’s the Puget Sound Beekeepers Association site.

In Colorado you’re allowed to have 2 hives per half acre. Not many doing it, but the community’s growing. :D

I would have a horrible urge to pet them all the time. I’ve been spotted in my yard poking at bumblebees. I don’t think I have the space anyway.
